Preview of Global TV newsmagazine interview 2/2

Global TV’s intro to this program:

If you’ve ever travelled to a foreign country you know that picking up a new language is no small feat. But what if you were able to master 10, 15, even 20 languages? It may seem impossible but a rare breed of super language learners can do just that.

They’re called hyperpolyglots. So what does it take to become a super language learner? Some say it requires years of dedicated studying but others say the brain of a hyperpolyglot is engineered differently.

16×9 searched the country to find the best language learners, and figure out what makes them tick.

The FORCE Cycle – Phase 2

These videos on the FORCE Cycle are quite long, but together they constitute a basic how-to course on building spoken proficiency through interaction with your target language community. This video discusses Phase 2 of the FORCE Cycle.

The FORCE Cycle – Phase 1

This video explains the first of 5 steps in my routine for building spoken language proficiency in the target larget language community.

I use the word “linguist” in this video, in the sense of the Oxford English Dictionary’s first definition: “a person skilled in foreign languages”. The second definition in the Oxford English Dictionary is: “a person who studies linguistics”. I am not a linguist in the second sense.

Introduction to the FORCE Strategy

Learn a simple system to improve speaking and listening proficiency every day.

Teachers, Coaches and Fish

Good teachers do a few more things than those I refer to as “language coaches”, but other people can also contribute to your language learning success. You need fish!

How to start a conversation with strangers in your target language

How to successfully engage in conversation with strangers in your target language. A few things you should keep in mind.

What are the differences between language proficiency levels?

Are you a Novice, Intermediate or Advanced speaker of your target language? Or could you even be at a Superior, Distinguished or Native level of proficiency? How do you know. Check it out in this video.

Do you speak another language “fluently”? …and what does that mean?

The word “fluent” is usually used quite loosely when describing language skill. In this video, I explain what I, and some other language teachers mean, when we use this term.

And yes, I noticed mistakes in this video, but I thought it was best to leave them in. I have not finished learning any languages yet, including English.
